Nicotine Addiction

A nicotine addiction means that someone has developed a dependence on tobacco products and that stopping could cause uncomfortable emotional, mental, and/or physical reactions.

The reason that many people don't succeed in stopping is because they are addicted to nicotine. That doesn't mean that you can't stop, but it does mean that it's likely to be difficult. Most people who eventually quit tobacco use try to stop two or three times before they succeed in quitting permanently.

How you stop - and, especially, when you stop - is a very personal matter. Only you know what you have to give up, and how the benefits of smoking can be weighed against the benefits of stopping. You will only stop when you have made a firm decision. When you do make up your mind, however, you can succeed, regardless of how addicted you may be.

Exercise: Think about decisions that you have made that you have stuck to - no matter what. Maybe one was the decision to clean your home every Saturday. Maybe another was to never buy a particular product again or to devote one day a month to your hobbies. Whatever it was, write down how you made that decision and what it is that makes you honor it despite temptations that might distract you from keeping that promise to yourself. You can write it in your journal or use your personal blog on this site to record your thoughts.

Then list all of the reasons you quit, or want to quit smoking. Leave some room to list others as you think of them
