   About Weight Gain Minimize

A weight gain after quitting smoking, especially in the first few months, can occur but it isn't inevitable.

The nicotine in cigarettes may slightly increase your metabolism. When you quit smoking, your appetite and metabolism return to a healthy and normal state which may lead to burning fewer calories. If you substitute snacking for smoking, the calories may quickly add up.

To avoid weight gain when you quit smoking, make diet and exercise part of your quit-smoking plan. It may help to:

  • Include physical activity in your daily routine. Just 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day not only burns calories but ups your metabolism and helps relieve withdrawal symptoms and cravings. (See Exercise Selections) If you choose something that you enjoy you'll be more likely to stay with it.

  • Plan high nutrition meals and snacks, including plenty of grains, fruits and vegetables. (See Peak Nutrition Meal Plan)

  • If you need to keep your mouth busy, chew on celery, carrot sticks, cinnamon sticks (cinnamon is often used to reduce cravings), flavored toothpicks or sugarless gum.

  • Keep a food diary, to track when, what and how much you eat every day. You can use your Member's Blog to do this.)

If you do gain weight remember that the health benefits of being smoke-free far exceed the problems associated with even moderate weight gain. Lung damage and heart disease are irreversible.Weight gain is usually about 5 - 10 pounds and is temporary.

The Link Between Craves and Nutrition

Peak nutrition helps to reduce cravings because it reduces a feeling of discomfort that you might have as a result of lacking certain nutrients. If you follow a highly nutritious diet and drink plenty of water you become more energetic. Then it becomes easier to ignore the craves and change your thoughts to act toward a glass of water, a nutritious snack or a walk rather than use tobacco..

And it just makes you feel so darned good!

Note: The latest research shows that certain foods like tea and coffee result in cigarettes tasting better than if one eats vegetables, and drinks water and milk.
